Petitgrain Essential Oil (fr. little grain) gains its name from the fact that it used to be extracted from the small unripe oranges of the plant. The oil has a greenish woody orange smell that is widely used in perfumery and found in colognes. Sometimes referred to as ‘the poor man’s Neroli’, it is the classic ingredient in eau de cologne. The Egyptians are said to have created exotic perfume blends using Petitgrain Essential Oil.

Petitgrain Essential Oil is made by steam distilling fresh leaves and twigs of the Bitter Orange tree Citrus aurantium. This is the same tree that Neroli Oil comes from, but Neroli Oil is made from steam distillation of the flowers/blossoms. The oil was previously extracted from green and young oranges the size of peas, hence the name Petitgrain. Petitgrain has many of the benefits and the same uses as Neroli Essential oil.
