Litsea Cubeba is actually the botanical name of the plant and the oil is often referred to by this name.

The essential oil of May Chang is obtained from the pepper-like fruits of the tree. The oil can also be obtained from the leaves but it is of an inferior quality as compared to that of the fruit. Produced by the steam- distillation method, the enticing fragrance of the oil makes it popular in the cosmetic and perfume industry. The oil has a medium strength aroma and a distinct refreshing lemony fragrance with fruity undertones.
