Frankincense Essential Oils
At Naturally Australian Products, we offer three species of Frankincense essential oil — each with unique properties, compositions, and applications. Whether you're developing skincare actives, wellness blends, or natural perfumery, understanding the subtle (and not-so-subtle) differences between Boswellia carteri, Boswellia serrata, and Boswellia frereana will help you select the best option for your formulation goals.
Let’s break them down:
The classic — rich, resinous, and grounding. Often considered the most traditional type of Frankincense, Boswellia carteri offers a well-balanced, sweet-resin aroma. This species is ideal for both emotional and topical applications, making it a go-to for skincare and aromatherapy. High in alpha-thujene and limonene, it’s valued for its anti-aging, soothing, and anti-inflammatory benefits.
Earthier, spicier, and wellness-focused. Native to India and widely used in Ayurvedic practices, Boswellia serrata is typically chosen for its wellness and anti-inflammatory potential. While its boswellic acid content is often cited in resin extracts, the essential oil still delivers a warm, spicy note that works well in topicals, balms, and massage oils.
Rare, citrusy, and premium in aroma. Known as the “King of Frankincense,” Boswellia frereana is sourced from Somalia and features a light, fruity scent with minimal bitterness. It contains very little to no boswellic acid but shines in high-end skincare and perfumery. Its soft profile is especially appealing in luxury creams, oils, and fragrance blends.
Which Frankincense Is Right for You?
Choosing the right Frankincense depends on what you’re formulating:
- Targeting aging or sensitive skin? Go with B. carteri.
- Formulating a warming body oil or balm? Try B. serrata.
- Looking for a soft, citrus-leaning top note in a fragrance or facial oil? B. frereana is your match.
Each species brings its own story, scent, and performance. All three are steam distilled, traceable, and available in bulk quantities.
